Pride Month

Pride Month

For fifty-three years LGBTQ+ members have been celebrated during the month of June. In 1969 in Manhattan New York on June 28 a protest for LGBTQ+ rights was held. The protest is known as the “Stonewall Riots”. Police raided the a gay club, Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village in New York City. This led to six days of protests and violence with law enforcements. This stimulated the gay rightss movement.

Since 1969 America, and the rest of the world, has been on the journey of bringing awareness to LGBTQ+ and being inclusive. The pride flag was designed and created by Gilbert Baker a gay desinger in 1978. In 2000 Bill Clinton declared June as as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. The first same sex couple was legally married in 2004.

All the progress of being inclusive and supportive hasn’t been all successful. Since 1989 more than 600 people have been murdered for being LGTBQ+. One in eight LGBTQ+ people (13%) have experienced some form of unequal treatment from healthcare staff because they’re LGBTQ+. About half of lesbian, gay and bi people (46 %) and trans people (47 %) feel able to be open about their sexual orientation or gender identity to everyone in their family. An estimated 10 million people identify as LGBTQ+. Bringing awareness is important. Those 10 million people deserve safety and acceptance. Celebrating and educating on pride can help so many. Pride History Month is in October and Pride Month is in June.
