SafeOregon is a program created for students, parents, school staff, community members and law enforcement in Oregon. Its goal is to help prevent school safety threats by encouraging students and the like to report anything potentially dangerous that comes up. According to Jill Weber, “We have had just over 20 reports this school year. Many have been very helpful in providing support to our students. Some are concerned with the mental health state of a student, others have been regarding student behaviors. We have not had any that are not helpful or useful to us at RHS”.
SafeOregon doesn’t at all change the way schools handle their safety situations; it’s just another way for information to come to the attention of school officials. All tips go to a tip line technician immediately, no matter the time of the report. The information received from tips is forwarded to the appropriate responding agency. Some situations need to be forwarded to multiple agencies For example, a tip involving a weapon being brought to school is forwarded to both school officials and law enforcement officials. According to a report from Safe Oregon dated September 1 to November 30 of 2019, bullying and/or harassment tips were received the most. Following that, possession, use, and/or distribution of drugs were highly reported. There were over 800 tips received during that time. Since tip content and circumstances will vary, the way where they are forwarded also varies.
There are multiple ways for people to contact SafeOregom, all of which can be found and accessed on their website, SafeOregon.com. They have an email, text number, call number, app, and web form set up that all have an option of anonymity.
