Most people have probably watched YouTube and enjoyed the amazing, high-quality videos that it provides. However, most people have likely seen the dark and poorly maintained side as well. YouTube should take more responsibility and watch with the upload of videos so people aren’t affected by something that has emotionally or mentally scarred them.

What are YouTube’s guidelines? Some of their policies includes the refraining of nudity or any pornographic material, the encouragement of lethal activity, cyberbullying, copyright, etc. Understandably, this content has a flexibility depending on the situation or how the producer portrays the content. YouTube also requires that people flag any material that they may think is unfit for being a part of the Internet.

However, YouTubers can get away with quite a bit more in production that may stray quite far from YouTube’s guidelines. For example, one YouTuber–known by many, and the only to reach over fifty million subscribers–Pewdiepie, has uploaded very questionable material onto his channel. The ability in YouTube to livestream can bring the lack of editing and refining of what’s said. For example, in one of Pewdiepie’s livestreams, he cussed, using the n-word, which didn’t settle well with his viewers. Although it doesn’t directly break the rules instilled by YouTube, some watching were outraged by his choice of language and tried to defamate him, even after he had apologized right away in his video and once again in an apology video. He made a mistake, and the media freaked out over what he did. Is that really worth being upset over compared to some other YouTubers’ materials? There have been countless cases of worse incidents and uses that go against the rules, but they haven’t been taken down or demoralized quite as harshly as Pewdiepie’s.

These YouTubers can get away with quite a bit more than just small, profane phrases or words. Onision, another popular channel on YouTube, has uploaded so much crude and inappropriate material. He speaks of suicide to himself, abuse, seeking pictures of underage girls, and nearly anything one can think of. Even though YouTube does pay a close watch to Onision, they don’t quite keep it as simple and appropriate as it could be.

There are things that YouTube is truly guilty of when it comes to what it allows and what it doesn’t allow. It often defends larger channels, ones that make it more money, to keep them alive and going, but it doesn’t mean that’s all it does. It can be very effective on its way of getting rid of profane or inappropriate content. YouTube still needs to be a little more strict on its content for the younger audiences.
