If you’re like myself when it comes to the holiday season, it can be difficult to get in a holly jolly mood when the time comes. Christmas movies are the perfect way to establish a Christmas spirit, so here are my top five foolproof Christmas movies that will leave you feeling all kinds of Christmassy–in no particular order.
Starting off with an oldie but a goodie, “Frosty The Snowman.” It is tradition within my family to watch this at least once during the winter time. The classic movie from 1969 is only twenty-two minutes long and follows a magic snowman’s adventure to keep his magic top hat that brings him to life.
If classic heartwarming cartoons aren’t up your alley, then surely “Home Alone” is. A Christmas staple, this witty classic will have you laughing out loud one minute and wincing the next. The movie follows Kevin McCallister being left home alone during Christmas, when he is forced to protect his home from burglars.
When I think of Christmas I can’t help but think of the music; my favorite Christmas song is also accompanied by a well loved movie: “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss. The famous author’s narrative (voiced by Boris Karloff) portrays a green hairy creature that has been outcast from society named The Grinch. His character has a personal vendetta against the holiday and sets out to ruin it. Though there are a few versions of the original, in my opinion the best rendition of this story is the live action in which Jim Carrey perfectly portrays The Grinch.
The Polar Express has a special place in my heart. This movie is perfectly good at restoring any lost Christmas spirit, for it follows a young boy who is beginning to lose his belief in Santa Claus. With a cast like Tom Hanks and Josh Hutcherson it’s impossible to walk away unsatisfied with what the movie is: a sweet Christmas movie that will have the “Hot Chocolate” song stuck in your head for hours.
It would be a disservice to walk away from this article without mentioning “A Christmas Carol.” The idea of the story follows Scrooge, a grumpy and greedy man who can’t find happiness and makes everyone around him miserable. He goes to sleep and is woken up by the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future to teach him a lesson about being kind. There are many film versions of this classic tale by Charles Dickens. Notable renditions include: “Barbie In a Christmas Carol,” “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” “A Muppet Christmas Carol,” “The Smurfs: a Christmas Carol,” and of course Disney’s animated
“A Christmas Carol” with Jim Carrey.
I hope this list was helpful for someone reading this. These are all movies that have been a staple in my childhood and life thus far. Between you and me, my favorite from this list would have to be “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” or “Mickey’s Christmas Carol.”
