The Old Main: What Happens Next?

Roseburg School Board issued the Heritage building back in 2022 to shut down after a community  member brought information regarding the terrible state the building was in at that time. While this may have helped teachers and students from using the building in its poor state, it produces time of deterioration and infestation among the building itself and other buildings on campus such as Main, Commons, Arts, etc. The Heritage building that was once a stable of Roseburg High, has now turned into a abandoned piece of history left to rot. Having this building in the poor state that it is in will only create more problems for the community and Roseburg High until it completely collapses.

Now referred to as the Old Main, the Heritage Building is one of the oldest buildings on Roseburg High School campus. It was built and completed by 1926 and constructed on a cow pasture known as Bellow’s Field. The building holds more than 15 classrooms and a weight room, having it be the main building on campus until they added more facilities to house more students. As time had past, the Old Main building had started to show its age, as more problems started to arise such as heating and cooling, pipe systems, flooding, etc.

Given the poor state that the building was falling under, many students and staff had discovered the issues by injuring themselves. In the year 2021, Mr. Cockman, an English teacher here at Roseburg High School, was using the window when it fell out of its frame and hit him, causing a concussion. Mrs. Painter had gotten a concussion as from a falling window well.  As more issues arise, so did students and teachers complaints about the building, in which a bond was created to construct a whole new building representing the Old Main. In the early year of 2022, Orange R Productions came together with a small team to show the horrible state that the Old Main was going through in hopes that the school board will pass the bond, however the decision was made on the bond proposal to not pass it before the video was shown to the school board.

Eventually, a community member had shown the school board the video documentary in which prompted them to shut down the Old Main and keep school running like normal in late 2022. As of now, the Old Main is closed off to students, however the building is still open to custodians and students who use the weight room inside the building. Having the building kept away from students is great for
