Is Nicki Minaj Still the Queen of Rap?

Nicki Minaj, known as the queen of rap, has been losing popularity ever since her feud with famous female rapper Megan Thee Stallion.  She’s had many feuds with rappers such as Lil Kim, Cardi B, and Latto, but this is one Minaj didn’t win. The beef between the two rappers started with Nicki Minaj dissing Megan on a song on her album Pink Friday 2.

Soon after, on January 26, 2024, Megan Thee Stallion released a clap back to all the rappers who used her shooting or other events as clout; her song named HISS. The rapper did not need to name one of her biggest critics, Nicki Minaj. The lyrics told the whole story. For example, in her song she says “These h*** don’t be mad at Megan, these h*** be mad at Megan’s law.” Megan’s law is a law that requires convicted sex offenders to comply with the national sex offender registry. However, TMZ reported that Richard Kanka, the father of the creator of Megan’s law, says that “using [his] daughter’s name in such a graphic and offensive manner was highly offensive to the pain his daughter and family felt.”

That HISS lyric is a dig at Minaj because her husband became a registered sex offender for sexually assaulting a minor in 1995. Fans and Nicki swept her husband ‘s past under the rug. Nicki dissed Megan for three years, but this one bar made her go off the rails through lengthy Instagram rants, multiple tweets, and a response in a music video named “Big Foot.” One of Minaj’s lyrics says, “Lyin’ on your dead mama, on-on your dead mama.” This line was very inappropriate as Megan lost her dad at 15 years old, her mom three years ago to brain cancer and her grandmother that same month. In the same song, she threatens Megan, saying “If you don’t apologize to your mama in twenty-four hours, s*** gon’ get uglier than Ken Barbie, okay? Don’t play.”

There has been no response to the “Big Foot” diss track, but silence may just be the better option. Through this feud, Megan’s streams and followers have been on a steady incline while Minaj’s popularity has been on a decline. Nicki Minaj was still undoubtedly an influential rapper, but she has been abusing her platform and passionate fan base; this disgraceful behavior makes one wonder if she should still be considered “the queen of rap.”
